Impact & Community Sharing

Impact is how we truly measure our success. While winning matches is nice, the real goal of MARS 2614—and FIRST Robotics as a whole—is changing our culture for the better.

As the 2017 FIRST Championship Impact Award winners and Hall of Fame members, MARS operates on “The MARS Plan”: Engage, Inspire, Sustain, Progression of Programs, and Creating Leaders.

MARSLib is a huge piece of that plan. By packaging our entire robot software into an open, well-documented, and student-friendly tool, we are reaching teams around the whole world.

We don’t want MARSLib to just be a fancy tool for the top 1% of teams. Our Impact strategy focuses on “raising the floor” so that every team has a chance:

  • We release Zero-to-MARS tutorials that walk beginners through hard setups step-by-step.
  • We release special warning tools (like “ProjectDoctors”) that act like an automated mentor to find wiring or code issues for teams out there who might not have an adult software coach.
  • We share our IO Abstraction (hardware splitting) so that teams with no money can still learn and write awesome logic in a free computer simulation before they ever buy a motor.

When you help write for MARSLib, you are taking part in a global effort to make advanced computer science free and powerful for thousands of students everywhere.
